Home Again, Home Again — New Year Ahead

Home again, home again…

It is December 27th, and I am trying to come up with something profound and thought-provoking, optimistic and reassuring for the New Year. Only 4 days to go, and 467 words for this year-ending missive.

Another brand-new year, 2012…so many challenges, so many new possibilities: where to start? I almost wish we were moving – I like to move – the chance to re-organize, deep-clean and de-clutter. But we’re not, and that’s okay, too. There are plenty of good things about NOT moving, like loving our location and community, stability, not having to go through all those address changes for utilities, driver’s licenses, schools, checks, address labels, etc. I like where we are, I just wish we could re-organize, deep clean and de-clutter, get rid of the old big-screen TV (who knew it would be so hard to get rid of what was, a decade ago, the latest in modern technology and home entertainment – and now doesn’t work anymore?!) and buy a new couch.

Since we knew we were not moving this year (our lease was up, we extended), and with our oldest kid a senior in high school next year, knowing we will be losing him so soon to college and beyond, we decided to Go BIG this year for Christmas. Instead of presents and all the usual routine, we took the kids on a fabulous Road Trip & Caribbean Cruise Adventure. We were gone nine days (six onboard) and it was amazing. I can’t write about that, yet, though, in case the major women’s magazine to which I pitched the article responds affirmatively (fingers crossed, everybody!). So…

I can’t think of any New Year’s Resolutions, either. Well, other than to land another article in a major magazine, I’d like to get back to that. And to update and revitalize The Rebel Housewife – it’s definitely time, but that is so overwhelming, I don’t even know where to start. With the 10th Anniversary of the Rebel Blog & Rebel Reviews coming up this year, I feel like a dinosaur. Apparently, I need to make the move to WordPress! Update my logo design! Figure out what to do with all those archives! Develop my Facebook presence – make a landing page! Twitter! Google+! LinkedIn!

Arrrggghhhh! I just did figure out how to add pictures to my blog posts – and how to announce the updates on Facebook & Twitter – let’s celebrate!

As I work my way through the post-vacation laundry, trying to get everything put away, I have decided to clean out my closet, which is certainly a resolution-worthy intention. If only it were as easy as cleaning out my email inboxes, which I did earlier today: from hundreds of messages to about a dozen. The To Do List is calling, including two new Rebel Reviews to close out the year. Perhaps I will come up with another couple of New Year’s Resolutions in that mess…or maybe not.

Happy New Year —
Live, Love & Laugh in 2012!

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas…

…or is it?!

I’m trying, I really am — and this will not be one of those whining, complaining blog posts about how hard the Holidays are on Mom; how there’s never enough time or money or magic; how everybody’s either looking for donations, cash, checks, party contributions or time on your oh-so-limited calendar…

No, let’s not go there.

The Holidays can be, and usually are, stressful, but there’s also an awful lot of good stuff. I can come up with 10 Things to Be Excited About, I know I can:

  1. The Magic kids still believe in: My older kids, now almost-15 and 12, want to force a confession about Santa, in no small part to “educate” their younger 9-year-old brother. I keep the discussion limited: “If you don’t believe in the Magic, the Magic won’t believe in you…and THE MAGIC can’t leave you a really great gift under the tree or a stocking full of goodies!” (It works!)
  2. Christmas Lists! If my children do no other creative writing all year, I can count on them for something truly entertaining and wonderful on the “Come-on Santa, Bring It All and Make My Miserable Life Complete Request List.” Want to see an example? 9yo Boy’s Wish List
  3. The Giving: Not so much the shopping, but the thinking, the planning, the scheming to surprise and delight, the giving is wonderful, especially when you find Just The Right Thing, big or small, for someone special.
  4. Gingerbread Cookies! An annual tradition in the Rebel Household, we make armies and armies of decorated Gingerbread Men for holiday parties, school friends, teacher gifts and neighbors…
  5. Cold Weather & Snuggling
  6. Winter Break – sleeping in and NO HOMEWORK!
  7. Christmas Cards – love to receive, even the letters.
  8. Decorations & Light Displays – another annual tradition, the Christmas Drive-Around to see all the lights and displays. We drive far and wide, to professional displays (around Atlanta: Stone Mountain, Lake Lanier Islands, Calloway Gardens) and to see everything at homes & businesses in-between. With a Thermos of hot chocolate, a to go box of gingerbread men and holiday music on the car stereo (now XM Radio Channel #23 – Holly) and we are set for several evenings of family entertainment.
  9. Christmas Music – all of it, from classical to elevator renditions to The Chipmunks!
  10. Christmas Classics – TV Shows & Books

That’s it. It’s nice to keep it simple. Of course, there is Christmas Morning and the children’s delight (hopefully) over their holiday haul; visiting friends & family and oh, yes, the holiday eating…

It is beginning to look — and feel — a lot like Christmas…
I’m on it!

New Rebel Review Posted

Happy Birthday to ME, Happy Birthday to ME…

Yes, it is THAT time again. I suddenly find myself FORTY-TWO (42) YEARS OLD. Wow.
And the really surprising thing is…it has been a great day, after a wonderful long weekend birthday getaway with my hubby to Florida. By all indications so far, 42 is going to be a fabulous year. It’s also the number of my current-favorite NASCAR driver, Juan Pablo Montoya, AND the Secret of the Universe, right? (According to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.)

With all the excitement of the long weekend, I didn’t expect much today — I was looking forward to two hours in the Media Center at 9yo ADHD Phenom’s elementary school! — but everybody surprised me, in small ways throughout the day: with a candle taped to my coffee cup; birthday cards, greetings, emails and tweets; several very well-chosen, very cool gifts (Thank You!!!) and a wonderful Japanese Hibachi meal performed at the table in front of us at Nakato Japanese Steakhouse in Atlanta. The kids were really good at the restaurant and didn’t fight or torment each other (or us!), too much.

Somewhere in all of that — actually, before all of that, for the most part — I decided to indulge myself a little bit today with a few goodies from my new-favorite online boutique: PeaceLoveMom. Check out the Rebel Review and see what could be all the rage (and perfect!) in gifts for Mom this year.

Because, you know, with my birthday today…’tis officially the Season and Christmas will be here before you know it!

SNOW in the South

In what has become our annual quest for SNOW after Christmas in Atlanta, we struck it rich this year, with three days of fun and play in the SNOW over the last weekend of Winter Break.

On the first day of our adventure – Saturday – we drove two hours to Scaly Mountain Outdoor Center in North Carolina. We had planned to go earlier during the vacation, but the weather was not cooperative for man-made snow — and that’s all we got down here so far this year.

Scaly Mountain is a roadside resort, kind of rustic, with a snow tube run during the winter and activities all year around. We arrived late in the afternoon, for the last run of the day, 4:00 to 6:00pm. There was one tube run operating, with a rope tow to the top of the hill. There was a very small “bunny hill”/kid’s play area, but the ice skating area was not iced or operating — it was a mud pit, suitable for wrestling, maybe, not much else.

There was quite a crowd and the line for tubing was long at first, but it thinned out after 5pm, for the last hour. The kids had a great time, but opted to leave out a little early for a drive-thru dinner and some geocaching on the way home.

Ticket prices were $22 each for two hours, unlimited runs.

Fun Family Activity – Geocaching!

So for Thanksgiving this year, I have to tell you what we actually did do, because I got distracted yesterday about the whole Urban Pioneers missing the tower thing…

We packed up the three kids and the dog and all their stuff and ours in the Jeep Commander (which is far, far too small for that inventory, really). We locked up the fabulous house as best we could, which is not at all like locking up the condo and riding down in the elevator to leave everything safely in charge of the Concierge and Security Guards, but there I go–

We went to the in-laws in Dahlonega, Georgia, which is about an hour north of Atlanta, OTP (Outside The Perimeter), very non-urban, very nice for a weekend. They live on an unpaved road, which is fine, and only goes to show how spoiled and urban I’ve become after 15 years in the city, ITP. But, again, I digress.

We had a fabulous time in the country over Thanksgiving: Geocaching!
No, that wasn’t a sneeze, but thank you.

My wonderful Father-In-Law (a retired military man) discovered, researched and decided that this would be a terrific family activity over the holiday — most importantly, getting everybody together and OUTSIDE, away from TVs, computers and video games. Not that we were totally away from all electronics, because Geocaching (“geo-cashing”) is a high-tech scavenger hunt, using GPS coordinates and tracking with a hand-held GPS device or the iPhone (which, coincidentally enough, hubby and I just bought ourselves for early-Christmas and G’Ma & G’Pa already had one) — yet another amazing thing you can do with an iPhone!

It all starts on a website: www.geocaching.com

As the good people there explain:
“Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game played throughout the world by adventure seekers equipped with GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, outdoors and then share your experiences online. Geocaching is enjoyed by people from all age groups, with a strong sense of community and support for the environment.”
– and – There are 692,733 active geocaches around the world.

This is serious stuff! And a lot of fun, really.

So you download the Geocaching app on your iPhone and register on the website as well. With your iPhone, you can locate all of the geocaches nearby, using any address or zip code or simply using your present location, which the iPhone can determine by satellite — isn’t that reassuring?! (And kind of creepy, yes.) And you go–

You have a little map, which shows your position relative to the geocache for which you are searching; and a digital compass (on the iPhone), which shows you which direction you are supposed to be going and how many miles/feet you are from the cache. It’s not an exact science, as we discovered, because somehow that little compass can go wild in your hand, even if you are standing still.

We went out in the country surrounding Dahlonega by a river to find our first geocache, which was hidden out in the woods in a metal ammo box. It is interesting to see the loyalties, strategies and alliances that develop on a geocaching mission. We had three iPhones and seven people, so we grouped, but intended to all stay together. That quickly fell apart, when my own dear hubby ditched me and the kids! He and his mom sent us off down one side of the river, hiking with G’Pa. By the time we figured out we were on the wrong side of the river and had to go all the way back to get to the other side, dear hubby — my very own Prince Charming — and G’Ma had jumped in the car, drove across the bridge and set off without us — they started running when we almost caught up to them and let us wander in Deliverance country while they cleverly located the geocache. So not pretty.

The “treasure” was a bunch of little toys and stuff, with instructions and a paper log. You sign in on the log to record your find and if you want to take something out of the geocache, you have to leave something in it’s place, following the directions in the geocache. We left band-aids, figuring they might be useful to future seekers, and we took a tagged geocache treasure — called a Travel Bug — to carry to another geocache location.

At the end of the day, you go back to the website and record your discoveries online. It’s very cool, with the Travel Bugs that are registered and have special metal dog tags with a unique identification number, you can read all about their journey — where they started and why somebody placed them in a geocache, and where they’ve been — you can even see their progress on a map online, as people have logged in and recorded where they picked them up and where they left them. One of the little guys we carried away (a little Jak-Jak doll from the Incredibles movie) had been traveling for almost three years and had traveled over 6,000 miles! The grandparents are going to take him with them to Texas this week and find a geocache there to get him off the East Coast and keep him in play.

On our first family Geocache adventure, we searched for three treasures:
1) The ammo box out by the river;
2) A teeny-tiny little metal canister thing placed near a Taco Bell; and
3) A treasure supposedly near the Dahlonega McDonalds, but we never found it and eventually got run off by the manager and a cruising sheriff…you know, there are certain risks to this! (Actually, the McD’s manager was very nice, just wanted to know what we all (4 adults/3 children) were doing wandering around the McD’s parking lot with our tricorders out. We did eventually give up because we couldn’t find the thing, so we all went in and had sodas.)

The men and male children went out later and found a couple more, and one the next morning, too, in the Dahlonega Visitor’s Center. They discovered one of those tagged Travel Bugs that we brought back to Atlanta and put into a geocache we found this morning (out again!) at the park near our house.

Geocaches are all over the place, and Geocaching is truly a fun, FREE outdoor family activity that everyone can enjoy together, providing you’re not ditching each other and running ahead to be FIRST…

And that’s Geocaching — what a hoot!

Thanksgiving 2008 – In the House

Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you are all stuffed and familied and shopped to your heart’s content after the long weekend – I can’t believe it’s over! And that we have only 24 days until Christmas!!

Last year, we enjoyed Thanksgiving in the tower, figuring out how to make Thanksgiving Dinner from the Publix DVD and discovering, in the Thanksgiving Recap: Lego, Yes; House-in-a-Box, NO.

I have to tell you, eight months in the fabulous house out of our midtown hi-rise condo…I really, really, really miss the tower!! That’s maybe a whole ‘nother story for another time, but I am so ready to go back, anytime, anyhow. (We are currently searching for a 3BR condo, seriously.)

In the lovely house, we have squirrels in the attic, and bugs everywhere, and landscaping/home maintenance issues — let’s not even talk about the POOL; leaves falling everywhere; garbage cans we have to take up & down the driveway, instead of just down the hall to the chute…what else? More room, yes; but more to clean and organize. A front yard and a backyard and four exits instead of just one, but we can’t just lock up and leave and not have to worry about anything — security, I miss that the most. And our Concierges. And our close neighbors and community. And the Publix in the basement. And everything within walking distance, including hubby’s office and we need another car, but don’t want to buy one…so we’re looking (for a condo, not a car).

I am completely off-track to what I had intended here, so I’ll close this one and blog another subject for tomorrow. But if you happen to know of any very nice, 3BR/2+Bath condos For Lease in Midtown Atlanta, please let me know ASAP!!

FIVE-DAY FAMILY ROAD TRIP!

See Also: Road Trip Re-Cap – Five After-Thoughts.

It is so good to be home, although it will take a full week to recover from our FIVE-DAY FAMILY ROAD TRIP! We had a fantastic time, one of our best family vacations ever, from Atlanta to Cocoa Beach, Florida for now-8yo ADHD Phenom’s birthday and fireworks on the beach on the 4th of July; three of us stayed and played all day at the Pirate Ship kid’s pool at the Holiday Inn/Cocoa Beach — it was awesome! — while hubby and 13yo Puberty Angst Boy ‘snuck off’ to Daytona International Speedway (about an hour away) for pre-race activities and all-day NASCAR fun on the 4th. Everybody was perfectly happy with the arrangement, and our NASCAR boys ended up on TV, behind the media stages during Trading Paint and Trackside at…Daytona — while Jimmie Johnson and Elliott Sadler were on-stage (two top NASCAR drivers)–ohmigod!!

After two nights at the beach, we drove to Orlando and spent two days at SeaWorld and Aquatica, SeaWorld’s fabulous — and, as it turns out, very, very popular — new water park. After thoroughly exhausting and “crisping” (sunburn) ourselves at the theme parks, we got up Monday morning to make the long drive home to Atlanta, but ended up calling Mocha-the-dog’s dog-holiday resort in Atlanta and ditching her for one more night, so we could ‘stop by’ Daytona (yes, the racetrack — an hour outside of Orlando) ‘on the way’ home. We ended up staying and playing at Daytona International Speedway and the Daytona 500 Experience — OFFICIAL ATTRACTION OF NASCAR — (track tour, IMAX, racing simulators, museum, NASCAR gift shop, etc.) until 4 o’clock in the afternoon, which got us home at midnight…just twelve short hours ago.

I picked up a happy dog up this morning, after taking hubby to work — we are now all laying around, not moving for the rest of the day…let the catching-up/vacation recovery — LAUNDRY — begin…
