Happy Mother’s Day! $25 & Under

Happy Mother’s Day! $25 & Under – Part One

by Sherri Caldwell – The Rebel Housewife®
https://rebelhousewife.com

As a Mom, I could easily rattle off a dozen ways, and more, in which I could be fabulously gifted on Mother’s Day for under $25. (In response to a challenge from NerdWallet — this is probably not what they had in mind, but there you go. I appreciate the great suggestion and motivation to do a Mother’s Day blog post this year!)

Here’s a Quickie: FIVE Best Gifts Under $25 For Mom:

  1. A BOOK (my most-favorite thing!) or gift card to Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble. Specific suggestion? Shameless plug: Rebel Housewife Rules: To Heck With Domestic Bliss! or anything by Erma Bombeck — trust me, she’ll love it.

  2. Lunch at my favorite restaurant. You do know Mom’s favorite restaurant, right? (This Mom’s is La Fonda Latina – Atlanta).
  3. Candles/Flowers (preferably plants) – so many choices! Check this out:
Candles (BBW) — Ooh, how ’bout them candles? (LOVE those flameless ones for outside!)
  4. CHOCOLATE — and not the cheap stuff you can buy in the check-out lane at the grocery store; at least go to the candy aisle and get some decent truffles. Look for Lindt LINDOR Assorted Chocolate Truffles. Yum.
  5. Jewelry — watches, earrings, bracelets/anklets, oh my! — Amazon Jewelry Sale.
My top picks — and, coincidentally, Happy Mother’s Day to ME:

There you go…easy! Now, if you want to go super-special, under-under $25, check Part Two for some other thoughts and ideas:

Mother’s Day: Thru the Years

As a new mother, 18 years ago, for my first and five-or-so subsequent Mother’s Days, I needed nothing more than TIME — for myself. The greatest imaginable gift for those early, blissful, exhausted Mother’s Days would have been a coupon book or certificate of offerings from friends, family, husband, neighbors…anyone…TIME: an offer to change a diaper; baby’s hour out; nap-time for Mommy; Date Night w/Daddy; 15 minutes to go to the bathroom or take a shower; a delivered meal. All free, or nearly so, but of inestimable worth to the new Mommy. (Of course, jewelry is always appropriate, especially birth-stone jewelry or mother’s jewelry — or diamonds, always perfect! Not necessarily under $25, or under-under, but I digress…)

Five years later (noting I had three children, age five & under, at this point), I treasured every toddler and kid-made arts & crafts symbol of love: the macaroni necklaces, handpainted plant pots; “stained glass” paper creations, thumbprint-decorated cardstock photo frames, ceramic handprints in clay. If my kids slapped glue and glitter paint on a stick, I loved it. I can still visualize those precious gifts, wrapped in simple tissue paper, so eagerly given by those little hands, the super-big-hugs. I still have many of those wonderful, priceless gifts.

As the mother of teenagers, 13 years later, there is a cat’s-in-the-cradle aspect to everything, and the ideal gift is TIME — with my kids. Appreciation. “I love you, Mom.” A family dinner at home (without having to cook or clean up after) — “you take it easy today, Mom.” A kid who might pick up their own dirty clothes, turn their own stinky socks rightside out, even run a load of laundry — woo! Another excellent idea for teenagers: help Mom with the TECHNOLOGY! Set up a ringtone for her; show her how to download and listen to music she would actually like, or a cool app; figure out for her why it’s making that noise, or that light keeps flashing, or why it won’t do what I want it to (whatever it is).

As a Mom, I can tell you– Mother’s Day does not need to be expensive or extravagant — truly, it shouldn’t be — to be special. How these 18 years slipped away so quickly, I don’t know. Everyone said they would, and they were right.

So relax.

The happiest Mother’s Days are completely free: “I love you, Mom. Thank you.”
I need to go get a nose-wipie (Kleenex) now…

Rebel Review – Kindle: Love or Hate?

Why Gift Kindle for Mom This Year?

  • Mom is busy and works hard. She deserves a few minutes of me-time! Kindle Paperwhite is a great accessory for busy moms — Paperwhite fits in her purse and connects effortlessly to another world between the pages of Mom’s favorite book or magazine, not to mention the millions of books available in the Kindle Store (including all the best-selling classics Mom loves). Plus, she won’t keep Dad awake at night with Paperwhite’s unique front-lit e-ink technology; she can read in bed without disturbing his snooze!
  • She could use an extra hand (or two) around the house. Kindle Fire HD 7″ and 8.9″ are Mom’s favorite helpers, offering the ability to stream cooking videos while playing chef and choose from countless apps and books that keep her up to speed with the latest organizational tips, how-to guides, cookbooks and inspirational novels.
  • Mom already has enough to worry about. Kindle FreeTime for the Kindle Fire family is practically a built-in babysitter for Mom, allowing her to create customized profiles for the kids which allot specific times for what they are allowed to read, how long they can play games for, and more.
  • She could use a vacation (understatement of the year). Whether she’s planning a vacation or stay-cation, Amazon Kindle is Mom’s ultimate travel companion — cute, compact (weighs less than a paperback) and #1 on her what to pack list. Kindle’s e-ink technology is a dream on the beach, with no glare. And, if she can only make it to backyard pools this year, she’ll still feel like she’s escaping when she gets lost in her Kindle.

Reality TV – Casting Call: MONSTER IN-LAWS

While this would not apply to me, Sherri Caldwell, happily-ever-after daughter-in-law of Ralph & Judi (kiss-kiss!), I have been asked to share what could be a rather…um…unique opportunity for..reality television fame (infamy?)…Check it out:

Hi Sherri,

My name is Lindsay, and I am an associate producer for Leftfield Pictures, the television production company behind History Channel’s Pawn Stars, Bravo’s Fashion Hunters, and A&E’s Monster In Laws.

We are currently casting for the second season of Monster In Laws, a program that looks to repair broken relationships with in-laws that don’t see eye to eye. I would love to reach out to moms everywhere who may be struggling with in-law issues…

————————————————–

“MONSTER IN-LAWS” on A&E Is Now Casting Nationwide

“A ground-breaking new series that explores the complex relationships between married couples and their in-laws.”

Are you struggling to maintain a relationship with an out-of-control in-law?

Is a cultural or background divide challenging your relationship?

Does the statement, “When mom/dad says no, ask grandma/grandpa” ring true in your family?

Does your mother or father-in-law still baby your husband/wife, challenge your parenting style or openly disrespect you?

If you’re desperate to repair your relationship with an in-law before it’s too late, we want to hear from you! Families who appear on the show will have the opportunity to work with a professional relationship expert who will help them to identify their issues and repair their relationships. Families who appear on the show will receive a financial honorarium as a “thank you” for their time and commitment to the show. In addition, we offer a finder’s fee for anyone who nominates a family that appears on the show.

[Note: The Rebel Housewife has not nominated anyone and has not/will not receive consideration of any kind for posting this or from the link below. This was too good not to share!]

[Also Note: However, if any one of you end up being on this show, I better be the first to know and to interview you about it!! GOOD LUCK, REBELS!]

FaceBook – Not Loving It

I fought it for YEARS…but I am finally on the FaceBook and none too happy about it.

It is all so overwhelming: too much information, infinite points of contact and messaging, strangers lurking, inconvenient intrusions and the biggest potential time-suck I can imagine, especially for addictive personalities and compulsive sharers (I am/have been a member of both groups) — no offense to my rabid FaceBook Friends who know how to FB and enjoy it, obviously a great deal.

I just don’t get it.

I have already been contacted, “Friend Requested”, by people I don’t know, don’t remember, don’t want to know, don’t want to remember and others I can’t even categorize. Please don’t be offended if I graciously “ignore” and keep this all very limited — I am not on FaceBook to make Friends or Friends of Friends. I have no interest in the competition for number of Friends or connections or, god forbid, the games…that would be really, really, really bad for me, due to the addictive personality and/or tendency to share compulsively, which I have learned — after 42 years — is not always such a great thing or even a good idea online or In The Real World.

I joined the FaceBook for one reason only: to interact with my school community, Georgia Cyber Academy. FaceBook is, apparently, where it’s at for the Moms, students and families who are enrolled in our online public charter school — it is the preferred method of communication and interaction about school, activities, events and everything related. How it came to this, I don’t know, but nevertheless, there, on FaceBook, I am.

Grumble, grumble…

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas…

…or is it?!

I’m trying, I really am — and this will not be one of those whining, complaining blog posts about how hard the Holidays are on Mom; how there’s never enough time or money or magic; how everybody’s either looking for donations, cash, checks, party contributions or time on your oh-so-limited calendar…

No, let’s not go there.

The Holidays can be, and usually are, stressful, but there’s also an awful lot of good stuff. I can come up with 10 Things to Be Excited About, I know I can:

  1. The Magic kids still believe in: My older kids, now almost-15 and 12, want to force a confession about Santa, in no small part to “educate” their younger 9-year-old brother. I keep the discussion limited: “If you don’t believe in the Magic, the Magic won’t believe in you…and THE MAGIC can’t leave you a really great gift under the tree or a stocking full of goodies!” (It works!)
  2. Christmas Lists! If my children do no other creative writing all year, I can count on them for something truly entertaining and wonderful on the “Come-on Santa, Bring It All and Make My Miserable Life Complete Request List.” Want to see an example? 9yo Boy’s Wish List
  3. The Giving: Not so much the shopping, but the thinking, the planning, the scheming to surprise and delight, the giving is wonderful, especially when you find Just The Right Thing, big or small, for someone special.
  4. Gingerbread Cookies! An annual tradition in the Rebel Household, we make armies and armies of decorated Gingerbread Men for holiday parties, school friends, teacher gifts and neighbors…
  5. Cold Weather & Snuggling
  6. Winter Break – sleeping in and NO HOMEWORK!
  7. Christmas Cards – love to receive, even the letters.
  8. Decorations & Light Displays – another annual tradition, the Christmas Drive-Around to see all the lights and displays. We drive far and wide, to professional displays (around Atlanta: Stone Mountain, Lake Lanier Islands, Calloway Gardens) and to see everything at homes & businesses in-between. With a Thermos of hot chocolate, a to go box of gingerbread men and holiday music on the car stereo (now XM Radio Channel #23 – Holly) and we are set for several evenings of family entertainment.
  9. Christmas Music – all of it, from classical to elevator renditions to The Chipmunks!
  10. Christmas Classics – TV Shows & Books

That’s it. It’s nice to keep it simple. Of course, there is Christmas Morning and the children’s delight (hopefully) over their holiday haul; visiting friends & family and oh, yes, the holiday eating…

It is beginning to look — and feel — a lot like Christmas…
I’m on it!

9-Year-Old’s Wish List (BOY)

[Note: This is a boy who LOVES technology and has an older brother and sister to expose him to the finer and more expensive things in life – note the absence of Legos or Star Wars or games & toys targeted and marketed to this age group…Still, it’s a fine example of a Christmas Wish List, verbatim!]

Asperger’s Syndrome: I’ll be in my cabinet…

@RebelUpdate Tweet of the Day:
RT @JoanCelebi: New Post: 17 Tips for Calming Your Child with Special Needs http://twurl.nl/fu7y02 (via @aspergers2mom)
26 minutes ago from Twitterrific

It has been a rough week with 9yo ADHD/Aspergers Phenom, 4th grader. The poor kid has not been able to catch a break with homework: remembering to write assignments down in his agenda and bring home everything he needs, i.e. books, worksheets, etc. This, in essence, is the one thing he must do to earn his afternoon “Computer Pass” at home, which is his most-favorite activity and incentive.

He came home Tuesday with *nothing* in his backpack…Oh, Lord…

My #1 task is to STAY CALM, because it is only when I am calm that I can help him get through any meltdown. If I get uptight and upset, if I start yelling back at him, it only feeds the fire. This is one of those home base concepts I have had to learn — probably the exact reason this special child was given to me. So I go into CALM mode, breathe, breathe…

He goes APESHIT (the only way I can adequately describe it):
Full-out on the floor, kicking, screaming, crying, wailing, cursing life and the universe.
He had after-school plans on the computer (a full agenda, in fact — he scribes endless To Do Lists for himself for computer time, just not schoolwork), important stuff to do on his new website and on ROBLOX.com, which is where he currently spends most of his computer time and which is an amazing game and programming environment. But he didn’t have the required “Computer Pass.”

Dramatic screaming and rolling on the kitchen floor (him, not me – staying calm). I *calmly* told him he would start losing time from his bedtime if he continued screaming at me, five minutes at a time. I thought I was going to lose my mind and my cool. He lost five minutes: “Bedtime at 8:25 tonight.” And he stopped. Laying in the middle of the kitchen floor, he just shut it off, which was…disconcerting (eye of the storm?).

He took a deep breath, sat up and, oddly enough, crawled into one of the lower (mostly empty) kitchen cabinets. He then announced, calmly: “Fine. I’m just going to stay in this cabinet the rest of the day, then.” Ummmmm…okay?

I took a deep breath, gave him a few minutes, and then I quietly gathered a few items and set them outside his cabinet door: a bagel, a flashlight and several books. I knocked on the door. He opened it. I removed a basket of plastic storage containers, really the only thing in that cabinet, and pointed to the things I had left for him. He took them inside, closed the cabinet door and said, “Thanks, Mom.”

He stayed in the cabinet, what he now calls his “pantry” (he put up a sign) for a good part of the afternoon and evening, coming out for fresh supplies and a couple of cushions — those kitchen cabinets aren’t really made for butt-comfort, you know.

I’m not really sure what the moral of this story is, except to say: Sometimes, a kid just needs his space — a small, dark, enclosed, peaceful, safe space of which he is in control. For thinking and reading. For calming down.

New Rebel Review Posted

Happy Birthday to ME, Happy Birthday to ME…

Yes, it is THAT time again. I suddenly find myself FORTY-TWO (42) YEARS OLD. Wow.
And the really surprising thing is…it has been a great day, after a wonderful long weekend birthday getaway with my hubby to Florida. By all indications so far, 42 is going to be a fabulous year. It’s also the number of my current-favorite NASCAR driver, Juan Pablo Montoya, AND the Secret of the Universe, right? (According to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.)

With all the excitement of the long weekend, I didn’t expect much today — I was looking forward to two hours in the Media Center at 9yo ADHD Phenom’s elementary school! — but everybody surprised me, in small ways throughout the day: with a candle taped to my coffee cup; birthday cards, greetings, emails and tweets; several very well-chosen, very cool gifts (Thank You!!!) and a wonderful Japanese Hibachi meal performed at the table in front of us at Nakato Japanese Steakhouse in Atlanta. The kids were really good at the restaurant and didn’t fight or torment each other (or us!), too much.

Somewhere in all of that — actually, before all of that, for the most part — I decided to indulge myself a little bit today with a few goodies from my new-favorite online boutique: PeaceLoveMom. Check out the Rebel Review and see what could be all the rage (and perfect!) in gifts for Mom this year.

Because, you know, with my birthday today…’tis officially the Season and Christmas will be here before you know it!

Camp Mommy 2009: Oprah’s Books of Summer

Worth a separate, more than 140-character Twitter mention: I am really excited about Oprah’s Books of Summer!

Check out the link for Oprah’s 25 Books You Can’t Put Down, along with reviews, reading guides, author interviews and book group support. Here is the link to the Books of Summer Bookmark and Summer Reading Calendar: HOW MANY HAVE YOU READ?

Oprah’s Summer Reading begins June 19 – June 26 with:

YES, MY DARLING DAUGHTER
by Margaret Leroy

Margaret Leroy’s eerily lovely novel Yes, My Darling Daughter (Sarah Crichton/Farrar, Straus and Giroux) is one of those rare books you’ll sit with till your bones ache. The mystery of why 4-year-old Sylvie longs to return to a house she has never seen, a family she cannot have known, takes this peculiar child, her anxious single mother, and a romantically scruffy psychologist onto the windswept beaches of a tiny coastal Irish village – a setting as enchantingly perilous as childhood itself.

Mom’s Back To School Advisory

Happy New (School) Year, Moms!

We are beginning our third week back — I’ve taken two weeks’ hiatus, did you notice?
It was not necessarily by plan or choice, but as a result of my experiences, I have some very important advice for parents, on Back To School:

TAKE IT EASY!!! — Breathe — Relax — Recover

And then give yourself a week — two or three, even; maybe it should be one week of recovery for each child Back To School (I still have one week left, in that case!) — to get back into the swing of things.

I know whereof I speak:
Our first week Back To School, two weeks ago, I went a little further than crazy. I tend to be an Overachiever (not always in a good way), and too-frequently test the limits of sanity (my own, and that of everyone around me, even Mocha-the-dog, who is the only one who really listens to me, anyway, until she finally gets up and walks away to lay down in another, quieter room).

Anyway, I decided the kids were Back To School, hubby was Back To Work (after our wonderful 20th Anniversary getaway long weekend)…I should be Back To SOMETHING, too.

So in the first week of school, you know, aside from all the shopping for school supplies and preparation for getting three kids organized at two different schools; getting everybody back on the school schedule and homework routines; with three homemade lunches to pack every morning; I decided I could also handle the following:

  • A Major Project Proposal I wanted to get out on Monday;
  • Negotiate a Two-Book Deal w/my agent on Tuesday;
  • Keep up with Rebel Housewife Blogs, Reviews & Contests as usual;
  • Get the whole house back in order and FINALLY catch up with the laundry!

I bought a new DayRunner (outside)/Franklin Covey(guts) organizer — the 2008 Weekly Planning Pages were $1.00 (normally $30) for the entire year’s package at Office Depot. I thought that was a great deal for five months’ calendar pages I needed (August – December) and I would be all organized and efficient in no time at all. (Hah.)

I decided to work out everyday with the new Wii Fit, while the kids were gone I would finally have a chance at the video games! That’s a whole ‘nother story, but that is actually the only thing I have managed to do consistently, at least for the last two weeks — and today! — and I am very proud of myself, for figuring it out and for keeping at it — and, I have actually lost ONE POUND (only 19 to go)! And it’s kind of fun — no, really pretty fun, actually — and interactive, so there you go.

As far as everything else…yeah well, it went downhill quickly: on Tuesday, I teleconferenced with my (once and now-former) agent, who brought me right back to reality on the current state of the publishing biz (not so good) and our chances (worse), without a whole lot of work. By Wednesday, I was commiserating with my best friend over lunch, which only remained non-alcoholic because the particular restaurant doesn’t serve Mommy Margaritas at noon…and by Thursday, I had my first knock-down (figuratively), drag-out STALEMATE with 13yo Puberty Angst Boy (8th grade) over homework and Bonus Points:

Why would you NOT do an assignment to turn in Friday (not to have to worry about it all weekend) for an EXTRA 10 BONUS POINTS?! (Especially when it’s not like you’re not going to NEED those points, at some point, based on last year’s grade report…)

13yo Puberty Angst Boy response: “But it’s not DUE until MONDAY…”

(That’s the very short version of a long argument — I left the dinner table and hid out in my bedroom with a book; he did NOT play his online computer game all night; nor did he do the assignment.)

Aaarrrggghhhh — is it just ME? Really?

So, trust me, dear Readers — Happy New (School) Year, Moms!
TAKE IT EASY–
