Happy Mother’s Day! $25 & Under

Happy Mother’s Day! $25 & Under – Part One

by Sherri Caldwell – The Rebel Housewife®
https://rebelhousewife.com

As a Mom, I could easily rattle off a dozen ways, and more, in which I could be fabulously gifted on Mother’s Day for under $25. (In response to a challenge from NerdWallet — this is probably not what they had in mind, but there you go. I appreciate the great suggestion and motivation to do a Mother’s Day blog post this year!)

Here’s a Quickie: FIVE Best Gifts Under $25 For Mom:

  1. A BOOK (my most-favorite thing!) or gift card to Amazon.com or Barnes & Noble. Specific suggestion? Shameless plug: Rebel Housewife Rules: To Heck With Domestic Bliss! or anything by Erma Bombeck — trust me, she’ll love it.

  2. Lunch at my favorite restaurant. You do know Mom’s favorite restaurant, right? (This Mom’s is La Fonda Latina – Atlanta).
  3. Candles/Flowers (preferably plants) – so many choices! Check this out:
Candles (BBW) — Ooh, how ’bout them candles? (LOVE those flameless ones for outside!)
  4. CHOCOLATE — and not the cheap stuff you can buy in the check-out lane at the grocery store; at least go to the candy aisle and get some decent truffles. Look for Lindt LINDOR Assorted Chocolate Truffles. Yum.
  5. Jewelry — watches, earrings, bracelets/anklets, oh my! — Amazon Jewelry Sale.
My top picks — and, coincidentally, Happy Mother’s Day to ME:

There you go…easy! Now, if you want to go super-special, under-under $25, check Part Two for some other thoughts and ideas:

Mother’s Day: Thru the Years

As a new mother, 18 years ago, for my first and five-or-so subsequent Mother’s Days, I needed nothing more than TIME — for myself. The greatest imaginable gift for those early, blissful, exhausted Mother’s Days would have been a coupon book or certificate of offerings from friends, family, husband, neighbors…anyone…TIME: an offer to change a diaper; baby’s hour out; nap-time for Mommy; Date Night w/Daddy; 15 minutes to go to the bathroom or take a shower; a delivered meal. All free, or nearly so, but of inestimable worth to the new Mommy. (Of course, jewelry is always appropriate, especially birth-stone jewelry or mother’s jewelry — or diamonds, always perfect! Not necessarily under $25, or under-under, but I digress…)

Five years later (noting I had three children, age five & under, at this point), I treasured every toddler and kid-made arts & crafts symbol of love: the macaroni necklaces, handpainted plant pots; “stained glass” paper creations, thumbprint-decorated cardstock photo frames, ceramic handprints in clay. If my kids slapped glue and glitter paint on a stick, I loved it. I can still visualize those precious gifts, wrapped in simple tissue paper, so eagerly given by those little hands, the super-big-hugs. I still have many of those wonderful, priceless gifts.

As the mother of teenagers, 13 years later, there is a cat’s-in-the-cradle aspect to everything, and the ideal gift is TIME — with my kids. Appreciation. “I love you, Mom.” A family dinner at home (without having to cook or clean up after) — “you take it easy today, Mom.” A kid who might pick up their own dirty clothes, turn their own stinky socks rightside out, even run a load of laundry — woo! Another excellent idea for teenagers: help Mom with the TECHNOLOGY! Set up a ringtone for her; show her how to download and listen to music she would actually like, or a cool app; figure out for her why it’s making that noise, or that light keeps flashing, or why it won’t do what I want it to (whatever it is).

As a Mom, I can tell you– Mother’s Day does not need to be expensive or extravagant — truly, it shouldn’t be — to be special. How these 18 years slipped away so quickly, I don’t know. Everyone said they would, and they were right.

So relax.

The happiest Mother’s Days are completely free: “I love you, Mom. Thank you.”
I need to go get a nose-wipie (Kleenex) now…

Rebel Review – Kindle: Love or Hate?

Why Gift Kindle for Mom This Year?

  • Mom is busy and works hard. She deserves a few minutes of me-time! Kindle Paperwhite is a great accessory for busy moms — Paperwhite fits in her purse and connects effortlessly to another world between the pages of Mom’s favorite book or magazine, not to mention the millions of books available in the Kindle Store (including all the best-selling classics Mom loves). Plus, she won’t keep Dad awake at night with Paperwhite’s unique front-lit e-ink technology; she can read in bed without disturbing his snooze!
  • She could use an extra hand (or two) around the house. Kindle Fire HD 7″ and 8.9″ are Mom’s favorite helpers, offering the ability to stream cooking videos while playing chef and choose from countless apps and books that keep her up to speed with the latest organizational tips, how-to guides, cookbooks and inspirational novels.
  • Mom already has enough to worry about. Kindle FreeTime for the Kindle Fire family is practically a built-in babysitter for Mom, allowing her to create customized profiles for the kids which allot specific times for what they are allowed to read, how long they can play games for, and more.
  • She could use a vacation (understatement of the year). Whether she’s planning a vacation or stay-cation, Amazon Kindle is Mom’s ultimate travel companion — cute, compact (weighs less than a paperback) and #1 on her what to pack list. Kindle’s e-ink technology is a dream on the beach, with no glare. And, if she can only make it to backyard pools this year, she’ll still feel like she’s escaping when she gets lost in her Kindle.

Happy Birthday to ME, Happy Birthday to ME…

Yes, it is THAT time again. I suddenly find myself FORTY-TWO (42) YEARS OLD. Wow.
And the really surprising thing is…it has been a great day, after a wonderful long weekend birthday getaway with my hubby to Florida. By all indications so far, 42 is going to be a fabulous year. It’s also the number of my current-favorite NASCAR driver, Juan Pablo Montoya, AND the Secret of the Universe, right? (According to The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.)

With all the excitement of the long weekend, I didn’t expect much today — I was looking forward to two hours in the Media Center at 9yo ADHD Phenom’s elementary school! — but everybody surprised me, in small ways throughout the day: with a candle taped to my coffee cup; birthday cards, greetings, emails and tweets; several very well-chosen, very cool gifts (Thank You!!!) and a wonderful Japanese Hibachi meal performed at the table in front of us at Nakato Japanese Steakhouse in Atlanta. The kids were really good at the restaurant and didn’t fight or torment each other (or us!), too much.

Somewhere in all of that — actually, before all of that, for the most part — I decided to indulge myself a little bit today with a few goodies from my new-favorite online boutique: PeaceLoveMom. Check out the Rebel Review and see what could be all the rage (and perfect!) in gifts for Mom this year.

Because, you know, with my birthday today…’tis officially the Season and Christmas will be here before you know it!

Healthy Lunch Product Research Survey

While we are on the topic of feeding kids and healthy lunches, a friend and fellow Midtown (Atlanta) Mom is conducting a professional market research survey, preparing to launch a new children’s lunch product that could save us all. Please read her message below and participate in the survey — it is easy and quick:

Hi. I am the mother of three boys, ages 8, 5 and 2 and have been researching a new product idea. I live in Atlanta, GA (Midtown) and have at times been frustrated with the lack of options available to make my boys quick, healthy, school lunches. I would value your insights on this topic to help guide my product development process.

If you are a parent of school-aged children, please take a few minutes to complete this simple survey. If you are willing to forward the link to family and friends, a sports team roster, a class email list and/or your neighborhood parent’s group, I would really appreciate it.

It’s easy and fun – and you might just help make history!

SNACKS: What do you feed a hungry crowd?

(AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION REQUIRED — SEE BELOW!)

With Summer Break fast-approaching (god help us all!), one of the many issues and concerns will be groceries — and lots of ’em, to feed hungry kids-at-home and all their friends.

My Mom Blogger-friend, Neena at Parenting Tips at NeenMachine.com – Parenting Tips for Busy Moms and Families, mentioned the bugger-boo of healthy snacking on her blog recently:

My kids love to snack. They are always hungry. And being the good mom that I am I buy lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains – stuff that is good for them. Always with the best intentions. I walk through the grocery store with visions of baking healthy muffins and oatmeal cookies, tossing up delicious salads and blending frosty smoothies – all chock full of nutrition and “good” calories. Ha!

I arrive home from the store with bags (reusable, of course) full of healthy snacks – or actually raw materials that have the potential to become healthy snacks – no, really, let’s just call it bags full of work to do. It’s true, the healthiest foods take time to prepare. Pre-packaged snacks are often not as nutritionally sound as foods that take some time to get from fridge to table.

And more often than not, my good intentions go awry when one (or two, or three) week(s) later, I pull out some unrecognizable fruit or vegetable out of my produce drawer.

So now I am on a mission to provide healthy snacks for kids and reduce food spoilage as well. I have come up with a simple one, two method that does take time, but not as much as my original ambitions…read the rest!

Our favorite, easy, healthy-ish snacks are:
(Well, I guess ice cream would probably have to be above #1.)
1. Fresh Strawberries (washed & cut, of course)
2. Fresh Watermelon
3. Baby Carrots
4. Peanut Butter & Crackers
5. Cheese & Crackers

My little one is going through a hot chocolate & popcorn phase, which will probably last through 90-degree weather (he’s just like that). He also goes through fresh or frozen blueberries and little green apples like you wouldn’t believe (usually not together). He’s a huge Cheese Nips fan, too. (I know, that’s not so good.)

I will also admit to the popularity of CHIPS in the house, potato chips and Dorito’s chips, and cookies, on occasion. I will buy those Nabisco “snack trays” with the individual bags of goodies, when they are Buy One Get One FREE at Publix…nobody here is perfect!

While we’re on that topic, do you remember what we used to snack on when we were kids? I know I must have enjoyed healthy snacks at some time in my childhood, but I remember most a whole lot of Pop-Tarts, Hostess Ding Dongs and those chocolate cupcakes with the squiggly white line on the top and the whipped cream in the middle…I’ll still buy Pop-Tarts, the old classics, Cinnamon and Cherry, but you just can’t buy the Hostess cakes anymore — they’ve got this paper-thin little crust of frosting or chocolate now and it’s just ruined the whole experience. Oh, now look there, I have digressed, once again.

So the question is, snack-providing moms and dads:
What do you feed your hungry crowd?

In preparation for summer, it would be great to have some fresh ideas, wouldn’t it?!

Christmas Eve & Amazon.com

One more and then I’m done and offline for Christmas…

Three packages just arrived from Amazon.com, which is a good thing. I ordered three last gifts on Friday, when it became evident that The Big Gift we had planned was not going to make it, even as a New Year’s Eve surprise — we were willing to wait, it was just that cool. But, alas, those video game makers and their production and release slips…

Anyway, I ordered these other items on Friday, clicking on the SATURDAY DELIVERY ONE-CLICK buttons and willingly paying the extra shipping (actually, it’s only $4.99 if you’ve paid your $79 for Amazon Prime, which I do, because I’m a total Amazon shopper — I save at least that much never having to go to the mall. And I do mean never…can’t remember the last time, since we escaped Buckhead three years ago…)

Amazon.com had me nervous, and kind of irate, this time: None of the packages showed up on Saturday. When I checked the account, the delivery dates had all changed to December 24th — arrrggghhh!! No margin for error. I was mostly disappointed: Amazon.com has never let me down before. I sent a little note, Saturday night at 11:30pm, and by Sunday afternoon, they sent a reassuring email in reply, along with refunding the additional shipping charges for the One-Day/Saturday Delivery that wasn’t. Now the packages are here, and all is right in our little corner of the world…

Love my Amazon.com

Teacher Gifts

Speaking of Teacher Gifts (see Holiday Gift Idea – Under $10 – For Mom or Tea Lover)…

Between three kids at two different schools this year, 2nd, 5th & 7th grades, we have 26 (yes, TWENTY-SIX!) different teachers who spend quality time with our children nearly every day. That doesn’t even include the Bus Driver and School Nurse (who we also spend a lot of time with — they love Nurse Petty!); or the Principal and Assistant Principals and School Counselor at the elementary school, who 7yo ADHD Phenom has gotten to know very well. (I think they all have my cell phone number on speed-dial.) (So we ‘owe’, in appreciation, each of them a little something, too.) So that’s, let me see, 31 people, 31 Gifts…

I try to recognize the primary and home room teachers, and the Bus Driver, with a small monetary gift ($20 gift cards), or I participate in the collective effort for the 5th grade “team”, etc. This year, the 7th grader doesn’t want to give anything to any of his teachers, but the 5th grade classes are adopting families as a community service project, so that’s money (another gift card) in addition to everything else. Holiday generosity definitely has its limits, especially when you consider everyone else in the community outside of school who we’d like to appreciate in some small way.

For us, this is where the Gingerbread Armies come in each year…

It works out well, since I’m a Gingerbread Boy fanatic anyway, so we spend two or three Sundays in December making Gingerbread Boys, dozens and dozens, carefully decorating each delectable cookie with squeeze frosting, red & green sprinkles and Holiday M&Ms for buttons (and hands)(and feet — you can never have enough Holiday M&Ms on a Gingerbread Boy!).

We either individually wrap them in small bags or saran wrap with ribbon, or take an Army-in-a-box to share at school, at work, for Holiday events, and to leave a box down at the desk in the lobby for our Concierges, Security Guards and Staff in our condo building (in addition to the collective effort/monetary donation by the condo association). More Gingerbread Boys are divvied into decorative tin boxes or gift bags for special delivery to our friends in Atlanta, always a great night to drive around, deliver cookies and look at holiday light displays.

It is a system that has worked for us for many years — a cherished Holiday Tradition, and our giftees (year after year) seem to appreciate our little lovin’ from the oven.

If you are still in a quandary over Teacher Gifts and such, check out a great article on www.GreatSchools.net: Gifts Teachers Really Want.

Happy Holidays — and remember: Keep it Sane!! OTTMGD!
